FIVE QUESTIONS WITH...MATT TILLER

Matt Tiller's Awkward Situation was a critical success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the musical comedian brings his tales of cringe-worthy moments to the Manchester Comedy Festival 2010 for free! Here, he encounters our five questions...

What is your show about?

Awkward situations are an everyday occurrence for me. The show tackles these and the everyday awkward situations we all come across. It’s called Matt Tiller’s Awkward Situation, which says it all, apart from the fact that it’s set to my acoustic indie punk folk style of music. At least that’s what I think that’s what it is - I’ve got a guitar and a ukulele anyhow and play them a lot in the show. And I wear a red velvet jacket.

It had some lovely reviews in Edinburgh (Hilarious… has many in the audience crying with laughter’ **** Hairline, ‘‘Instantly likeable… engaging personality and fun musical style.’ British Comedy Guide). So I can guarantee that it is not an absolute stinker and who could ask for more than that for an entry fee of zero pounds.

What has been the highlight of your comedy career thus far?

Hmm. A few gigs stand out in the short time I’ve been performing. I had a great crowd at the Kendal Calling festival. When I got up there were just a few people, but quickly a huge crowd gathered – very satisfying. Outside of stand up I produce television comedy and the highlight has to be getting my first series commissioned – the BBC Three sitcom Lunch Monkeys, which has been recommissioned. I’m still working towards that level of highlight in my live career, but I enjoy almost every show I do.

Finish this sentence: "If you like an awkward man with glasses and a guitar, then you'll like my show"

What will you do in the hour before your show?

Intense yogic breathing exercises, a wheatgrass enema, pump iron. Awkward encounter with Lass O’Gowrie bar staff while ordering pre-show pint of ale (entirely my fault). Switch on guitar amp.

Name 3 other comics you would recommend seeing.

There are a huge number of excellent shows this year, so it’s tricky, but here goes:

Andrew O’Neill – saw this in Edinburgh and it is a very good stand up show
Slaughterhouse Downsized featuring Gary Morris – a brilliantly offbeat character comedian with incredible energy
Richard Herring – I’ve seen many of Richard’s shows, but hadn’t seen Christ on a Bike, which he resurrected this year. It’s brilliant

I’d also suggest checking out lesser know names too many of whom, like me, are putting there shows on for free or with very affordable ticket prices – (Mick Sergeant, Danny Pensive, George Cottier, Graham Goring & Chris Stokes, Joe Lycett & Andrew Ryan to name but a few excellent examples)

Matt Tiller's Awkward Situation is on at Lass O'Gowrie on 22nd October - it's a free show but the crucial details are here.
