MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY – THE LAST SATURDAY 30th OCT

This year there have been plenty of shows running in the daylight hours and I thought it was about time I caught one of them. Phil Ellis’ Big Comedy Quiz has had a few outings at the Frog and Bucket and again was an event I’d been meaning to catch. So off we went to the Frog – in daylight! In the afternoon! It was a nice little turn out for a Saturday afternoon. Ellis hosts the quiz – which has as much to do with serious trivia as Shooting Stars does – besuited and atop a stepladder. He’s un-ablely assisted by the very sparkly presence of Susan Vale and the very quiet George Cottier. It’s a beguiling experience with questions as off the wall as Why is… Mel Gibson? A very good point well made. It continues on the last Tuesday of every month and is well worth dropping into.
It feels like I’ve been neglecting the Lass O’Gowrie and its festival delights in the last two weeks - it’s put on no less than 30 festival shows and is an integral part of the event. So I rounded the day off there to help judge the final of the Old Speckled Hen Comedian of the Year competition. Unlike my experience of judging competitions in the past pub manager Lisa Davies and resident comedian TheOneLikeFish had created an X Factor style atmosphere with the judges giving verbal feedback rather than just scribbling away and making their decisions in the dark. It’s nerve racking but as I’ve always (at least tried…) to take the view that you don’t put anything in print that you’d not be prepared to say to someone’s face it seems only right that you can say it over the mic. Myself and fellow judges comedian turned promoter Neil ‘Spider’ Smith and the fantastic comic Greg Cook were all pretty fair and polite to the competitors, though that wasn’t difficult as they all were genuinely pretty decent acts. But a choice had to be made and Lewis Jones came in third, Sarah Cassidy second and Scott Bennett first.
A few drinks (it’s the last Saturday and an extra hour in bed to recover) then home and bed ready for the final onslaught.

MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY (ON TOUR) – THE BOY WITH TAPE ON HIS FACE 29th OCT

Ok, ok so it’s not strictly a Manchester Comedy Festival diary piece tonight but I went over to Bolton and the Albert Halls to see the full length solo show by The Boy With Tape On His Face.
It’s one of many comedy events put on by Chris Cordingley, the new Business Development Manager at the theatre, who’s been doing his own bodding about the comedy festival this year. Maybe they’ll join us next year. Anyway we’re doing a little write up as Tape Face - as he is affectionately known by his management – as he’s at the Frog and Bucket tomorrow (Sat 30) performing new material and will also appear at the BBC Presents event at The Comedy Store on Sunday (31st).
So for a little teaser - The Boy With Tape On His Face is one of the most magical shows around. It takes silent humour and runs with it; for the full hour Wills says nothing instead using music, props and crucially audience members to create his world. Don’t despair if you think audience participation isn’t for you, after only a few minutes you feel compelled to join in and almost a little disappointed if by the end of the show he hasn’t made assertive eye contact with you and beckoned you to the stage. Ladies impersonate lions, there’s an unconventional sing a long and a lone male channels the Fully Monty. Just go see.

MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY – APOTHECA 28th OCT

Over the years Wayne Williams and LOL! Manchester have put on plenty of comedy events around the area so it’s only proper that they should be part of the programme at the festival this year. Williams has put on a mammoth line up at Apotheca, the cosy bar in the Northern Quarter, as well as Moho Live and Simple in the same locality. So over a week into the festival I figured it was time to pay Apotheca a visit.
When I dropped in and caught the end of Leicester comedian Jim Smallman one man show where he was regaling with tales of what happened when he asked his audiences what’s the worst thing you’ve done when drunk.
Next show up was Ashley Frieze’s The Seven Deadly Sings. The show, which he performed for a couple of weeks run as part of the Free Fringe in Edinburgh this year, attempts to classify all the songs or sings into one of seven different categories – story, love, complacency, pain, attitude, novelty or commercial. It succeeds in displaying his musical talent and knowledge as well as his skills as a funnyman of course. Particular highlights include his pain song about a bad stay in a London hotel and how to diffuse a rap song.
Rounding off the night was The Great Big Comedy Picnic and Ian Fox joined Ashley Frieze in their double-header show that also ran at the Free Fringe this year. Fox told sharp one-liners featuring toaster revenge at the end of a relationship and a groping hiccup in the swimming baths. Then Frieze returned to the stage with an entirely different set of songs including a dedication to Manchester’s Lidl and his inadequacies in bed.

MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY - JASON COOK AND PAT MONAHAN 27th OCT

It was back to the Frog and Bucket tonight for Geordie Jason Cook’s latest show. Somehow I missed it in Edinburgh and knowing that you can guarantee an acclaimed, heartfelt and of course funny show from Cook it was definitely one to catch. The End (Part One) was inspired by Cook’s skirmish with death last year when his wife Clare had to call him an ambulance because he thought he was having a heart attack. Inevitably the scare made him reassess his life whilst also giving him another great idea for a new show. As ever his latest offering mixed likable amiability, gags aplenty and a fair dollop of pathos.
Though it was tempting to stay for the Late Night Asylum following Cook’s gig in the Frog we were off to Tiger Lounge to catch the last few hours of Patrick Monahan’s gig, sorry last half hour. Actually I was right first time it was more like hours – apparently running on Duracell or channelling Ken Dodd he really can keep going. If there were awards for endurance on stage his mantelpiece would be stuffed full. The cheeky Irish/Iranian/Middlesbrough charmer works the room loving nothing better than to natter to his crowd plus there’s cuddles and a bit of dancing to end the night. With Jonathan Paylor and Sean Moran doing half hour shows each at the top of the night it had been a bargain of an evening.
Then it was off for an all-important festival curry and to pull the sofa bed out for Monahan as he’s kipping over at mine.

MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY – RUSSELL KANE @ THE COMEDY STORE 261010

When venues start programming their comedy festival events it’s usually way before the Edinburgh Fringe so there’s no sure fire way of knowing which of the shows are likely to be the hits and/or award winners. But by fluke it often happens that come October you find yourself with an award winner on your hands – it was the Frog and Bucket with Brendon Burns in 2007 - and this year it was the Comedy Store’s turn having booked Russell Kane months before his Edinburgh Comedy Award win this August. That said it wouldn’t take much of a stretch of the imagination to predict that he may well have won it this year as he had been nominated for the award three times before.
Also to see him perform tonight it gives you a bloody good idea as to what it is was that they saw it in him and saw fit to highlight. Kane is a live wire of ideas as he thrashes about on stage, ideas buzzing from his head. Spending the first section getting a little distracted by the crowd and playing around with several ideas, he gets to the meat of the show when he begins to talk about his father. It’s a topic he’s touched on before in his material but this show chooses to focus on him even more closely and the council house that he's bought on which built an extension on to, the garden he sunk a swimming pool into and put an original 1980s brown microwave in the kitchen. It’s a smart fast paced belly laugh of a show which was preceded by a handful of characters from Kane’s own other half Sadie Hasler who performed a solo show this year too with impressions of good time gal Katherine Hepburn, Emmeline Pankhurst as a bit of a slapper and Myra Hindley the poet.
What more could you ask for?

MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY – MICK FERRY @ THE ENGINE HOUSE 25th OCT

After bobbing up the road to The Engine House on my bicycle (definitely the best form of transport to get to festival venues) Mick Ferry turned to me ‘never going to spot you in that Marissa’ pointing at my chest. Eh? Looking down to realise that I’m still wearing my hi-vis reflective strip. Ahem, yes quite. Distracting cycling gear removed, a very civilised cuppa and piece of cake purchased and it’s time to settle in for Ferry’s show at The Engine House – the festival venue run by Rob Riley at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation Centre in Chorlton Mill. As well as housing an archive, library and study centre it has a lovely performance space too. What better a place to see another (Greater) Manchester legend (just give it time…) in Ferry.
His show this year was inspired by his debut Edinburgh show in 2009 and how it almost broke him. For some reason someone at his venue had thought it would be a good idea to put on the Chippendales in the room next door, separated from Ferry’s space by little more than a curtain. Consequently Ferry’s punch lines were heckled by women screaming for the strippers. Ferry’s The Missing Chippendale weaves poignancy, pathos and a strong sense of the absurd to create a great hour long show investing his set with a fantastically creative and hilarious turn of phrase.
He’s also quite persuasive when it comes to heading off for a drink so we dropped by Apotheca for a quick one afterwards but remembering how drunk I was when I went for a drink after Ferry’s show in 2009 I made sure it really was just the one this time…

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH... DAN CARDWELL

This year's Manchester Comedy Festival saw the debut of Dan Cardwell's first full-length show. We asked him FIVE BIG QUESTIONS to find out a little more about The Man Who Was Nearly There...

1) What is your show about?

The show is about my terrible year. I've had a list of things I wanted by 30 and it looked like I was going to get them. Until a week before my big 3 0. My girlfriend left me, I lost my house and my dream career came crashing down. I was a little down and heartbroken. Then my friends kept telling me I should be grateful, as I had my health and sanity. “Nothing matters if you've got your health and your sanity”, they'd say. Which is the point when an old tramp man showed up proclaiming to be me from the future. Obviously.

2) What has been the highlight of your comedy career thus far?

I entered a competition a few years ago and died terribly. I was placed 16th. Out of 14. I think they were mocking me when they asked me back, but I thought, well, Jesus died and when he came back everyone started to worship him. So I went back. And I won! Proving not only was I the second coming of the Messiah, but also the best new act in the whole of Dorset. Good times.

3) Finish this sentence: "If you like over elaborate high-concept storytelling with melancholy, heartbreak and jokes; alongside true stories of headbutting Oscar Winning actresses and being terrifyingly exposed to Keith Chegwin's man-parts then you'll like my show"

4) What will you do in the hour before your show?

First 40 mins: Chat to friends, have a glass of wine.
Remaining 20 mins: Casually tell my friends ‘I best go and run over the show’ as if it doesn’t matter, then spend 19 mins behind close doors nervously pacing and uttering random lines from the show. To myself. Like a madman. Wondering why I spent the last 40 minutes chatting to friends and drinking vino.

5) Name 3 other comics you would recommend seeing.

WIL HODGSON: PUNKANORY
A great story-teller stand-up, his shows are unique. Although, what do you expect from a pink-haired, ex-wrestler, ex-skinhead who collects My Little Ponies and Care Bears?

BRIAN DAMAGE AND KRYSTAAL : PEARSHAPED
Somehow mixing sheer misery and sheer daftness, I have seen them hundreds of times, but always cry with laughter.

RICHARD RYCROFT: THE SONGS I'LL NEVER SING
OK, so, nepotism alert, he is my friend. But his show is genuinely warm and witty and it has the greatest middle-aged white man rap you will ever see.

MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY – BRENDON BURNS @ THE FROG AND BUCKET SUNDAY 24th OCT

Continuing the wealth of acclaimed Edinburgh shows at the festival The Frog and Bucket once again played host to Aussie comic Brendon Burns. Often painted as something of a bad boy of the comedy scene, truth is he’s a big softy. He’s always outspoken, quite shouty and doesn’t mince his words or terminology but listen to him and what he’s actually saying (unlike the two women sat on the balcony who chose to chatter through much of his show – shame on you) he’s a big loveable hippy.
He was also jetlagged as he’s just returned – presumably on the ‘red eye’ through the night flight - from New York. Still the trip provided him with his opening rant about Americans and their (in a lot of cases) ignorance of the rest of the world. The Yanks and subsequently swans dealt with Burns moves on to a very logical routine about paedophiles and then a fantastic segment concerning religion and in particular atheism. Feeling that he’s starting to lose the audience - though I would beg to differ - he ditches the pre prepared ending to the show and instead segues into his material about Arnold Schwarzenegger. Shame he didn’t perform the original ending but nevertheless his Arnie impression is always a pleasure.
Then on the way back down Oldham Street I bumped into Steve Bennett from Chortle comedy website and who was up for a couple of days from London to check out the festival. See that’s how important we are!

MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY – ANDREW O’NEILL 23rd OCT

It could have all gone a bit pear shaped when just prior to the festival one of the key venues – Remedy in Fallowfield housing all the XSMalarkey gigs – was promptly closed by the council. Most shows were re-housed in the Queen of Hearts pub across the way but one gig, Andrew O’Neill’s was squirreled off into town to relatively new music venue Sound Control. Despite the upheaval there was a fine crowd awaiting him in the lovely little venue as the tour of his latest show Occult Comedian dropped by the festival. Having not seen O’Neill perform for some time but knowing that it’s always a pleasure it seemed like a fine way to spend a Saturday night. As ever I was greeted warmly by the comic himself looking resplendent in a top, short skirt and baseball boots (replaced by killer heels prior to mounting the stage) all in matching black with a slash of red lipstick. The boy has style. I should explain that O’Neill is the only straight, transvestite, anarchist, metal head on the comedy circuit. It’s a gift of an angle for a comedian but it’s far from a gimmick as O’Neill’s material has no problems speaking for itself. As he takes us on a journey through his life taking in Satanism, magic, veganism, cross dressing, sexuality, gender and not forgetting his music taste his stand up skill is well displayed. It’s surreal and offbeat in many places, he’s always keen to keep us on our toes with a random line. Yet it’s intelligent and his references and topics are clearly, interestingly and above all wittily explained.; he certainly knows how to finely craft a gag. All in all a grand way to spend a Saturday night.

MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY – MARK WATSON @ APOLLO 22nd OCT 2010

It doesn’t seem like five minutes since I first saw Mark Watson. As a completely unknown comedian, at least to us on the Manchester comedy circuit - he played the Buzz club in Chorlton having hitched a lift with a fellow London comic. The other comic drifted into obscurity but even back then there was something about Watson. Something in his geeky, nervy style and, despite growing up in the west country, he’d decided to perform with the Welsh accent of his South Wales relatives. These days he’s dropped the accent but that wonderfully edgy, breathless style persists.
It’s fitting that he should be a part of our festival line up, he’s a festival kind of a guy. He made his name at the Edinburgh Fringe and in particular by performing his innovative 24 and 36 hour shows. Tonight he was just doing the two though keeping up the hard work by providing his own support. As ever it was a poetic couple of hours weaving deftly though fatherhood, latecomers and advocating that we’re all generally a bit nicer to each other. And taking that spirit on board I went up after the show and said hello to Mark as in all the times I've interviewed him we'd never actually met face to face.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH... SUSAN MURRAY

We caught up with the critically acclaimed Susan Murray to ask her five questions about her debut solo show, The Glottal Stops Here...

1) What is your show about?

Accents. I’m obsessed as I have the crappest one- Black Country. There’s also bits of my life in there, to keep it spicy.

2) What has been the highlight of your comedy career thus far?

Getting the word “Tw*t” printed it the Independent in the form of one of the top Edinburgh Festival gags. Some people spend thousands trying to find their “inner child”. I’m still trying to find my outer adult.

3) Finish this sentence: "If you like laughing your tits off, then you'll like my show"

4) What will you do in the hour before your show?

Well apart from travelling to the gig (I’m in Hartlepool the night before. Talk about suffering for your art!) I’ll be sorting out all the technical stuff and press ganging some random passing stranger to do a couple of lighting cues for me. I pay in beer. Then, I’ll be trying to re-cram all the jokes back into my brain as some of them will have dribbled out since August.

5) Name 3 other comics you would recommend seeing.

Jimeoin , Kevin Gildea, Alex Boardman at the festival- otherwise Wanda Sykes (USA), Greg Davis, Kevin Eldon (whenever you can)

The Glottal Stops Here is on at Apotheca on the 31st October. Click here to buy tickets
