MARISSA’S MANCHESTER COMEDY FESTIVAL DIARY – BRENDON BURNS @ THE FROG AND BUCKET SUNDAY 24th OCT

Continuing the wealth of acclaimed Edinburgh shows at the festival The Frog and Bucket once again played host to Aussie comic Brendon Burns. Often painted as something of a bad boy of the comedy scene, truth is he’s a big softy. He’s always outspoken, quite shouty and doesn’t mince his words or terminology but listen to him and what he’s actually saying (unlike the two women sat on the balcony who chose to chatter through much of his show – shame on you) he’s a big loveable hippy.
He was also jetlagged as he’s just returned – presumably on the ‘red eye’ through the night flight - from New York. Still the trip provided him with his opening rant about Americans and their (in a lot of cases) ignorance of the rest of the world. The Yanks and subsequently swans dealt with Burns moves on to a very logical routine about paedophiles and then a fantastic segment concerning religion and in particular atheism. Feeling that he’s starting to lose the audience - though I would beg to differ - he ditches the pre prepared ending to the show and instead segues into his material about Arnold Schwarzenegger. Shame he didn’t perform the original ending but nevertheless his Arnie impression is always a pleasure.
Then on the way back down Oldham Street I bumped into Steve Bennett from Chortle comedy website and who was up for a couple of days from London to check out the festival. See that’s how important we are!
